DAGUPAN CITY – In observance of the Kidney Prevention Month this June, the City Health Office (CHO) will conduct a citywide campaign in all public schools to create awareness on the prevention of kidney disease.

Kidney disease is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the city and in the country, making it as a health problem, said Dr. Doris Jovellanos of the CHO.

For this month, the city will conduct a case finding activity like urinalysis where the CHO will collect urine from school children to check if they have kidney problems.

“Mayor Belen T. Fernandez would like to make an early detection so we could properly manage the disease in our city, especially among women,” said Jovellanos.

Jovellanos said that most women are vulnerable to contracting urinary tract infections due to the anatomy of women as their urethra is shorter than that of the men’s.

“Kapag shorter ang urethra, mas mabilis ang pag-akyat ng mikrobyo kaya mas mabilis silang magkaroon ng UTI,” said Jovellanos.

Jovellanos is encouraging adults to drink from eight to 10 glasses of water daily and for kids, six to eight glasses of water daily, to prevent kidney disease.

She also advised the public to observe personal hygiene, refrain from too much salt intake and maintain a good eating habit.

In drinking medicine especially pain relievers; patients should avoid taking medicines like antibiotics with no proper prescription by doctors.

Jovellanos said that in taking antibiotics, it is best that patients observe the seven-day prescription requirement in order to avoid taking the medicine over and over again, which is the best way to counter the spread of bacteria.
