DAGUPAN CITY – This year’s Dagupan City Athletic Association (DCAA) Division Meet officially kicked off at CSI Stadia on September 12, with basketball and volleyball tournaments formally opening the event.
At least 1,845 students from public and private elementary and high schools attended the event, with a total of 123 teams competing in today’s tournament alone, comprising of 62 boys and girls teams in basketball and 61 boys and girls teams in volleyball.
The event also featured the search for Mr. and Ms. DCAA in both elementary and secondary levels, with 110 candidates vying for titles in their levels.
At least 30 pairs of boys and girls competed in the elementary level while 25 pairs competed in the high school level.
The 2018 DCAA Division Meet, held in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd), Dagupan City Sports Commission (DCSC) and the city government, aims to promote sports and sportsmanship among the youth.
With many young pupils also in attendance, DCSC Vice Chairman Finnela T. Sim said the event was also part of their grassroots program in a bid to introduce sports to younger Dagupenos. This, after the DCSC successfully conducted a sports program last summer with over 800 graduates.
Sim also disclosed that the division meet was part of the process in discovering and selecting the top athletes to represent the city in the upcoming Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) meet.
Dagupan is the defending champion in the R1AA meet.
In her message, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez said the local government is fully supporting the city’s youth through its numerous programs.
“Our city continues to invest in sports and education. We have the highest budget in education in our city’s history. This is because we want our children to benefit from all of the programs being made by the city government and DepEd for them.”
Aside from basketball and volleyball, the division will also host at least 19 other sports events such as arnis, baseball, swimming and many others in the coming months.
