DAGUPAN CITY— Fifty grade school pupils of the Bonuan Boquig Elementary School participated in the City Accounting Office’s entrepreneurship program called Business and Livelihood Literacy (BULILIT) in their campus on February 20.
Led by City Accountant Melissa Mendoza, the program aims to inculcate into the minds of the youth the importance of frugality and its long-term positive impact on the welfare of their families and in their future.
According to Mendoza, the program hopes to teach the Dagupan youth on how to earn and save money as well as in making their own livelihood projects.
“Simpleng entrepreneurship lang siya na gusto naming i-share sa mga bata. Gusto lang naming sana i-educate yung mga kabataan sa kagandahan ng may ipon. At the same time, ipapasok naming kung paano sila kikita at ili-link namin ito sa kanilang garden.” said Mendoza.
The pupils of Bonuan Boquig Elementary School are known for maintaining a campus garden where they regularly plant, cultivate and harvest various types of vegetables.
The City Accounting Office hopes to capitalize on students’ initiative by teaching them how to properly sell their harvests and how to save their income, saying: “Ituturo namin kung anong benefit ang nakukuha nila sa mga pananim nila.Pwede nilang i-benta ‘yon.
Out of that, magkakaroon sila ng savings. Tapos ipapasok na namin kung paano nila ‘i-spend wisely’ yung kita nila.” As a follow-up, the students will then be checked in the near future to find out if they had effectively learned the program.
Mendoza also hopes that the students will not just learn to practice thriftiness and recognize the merits of hard work but to also impart what they had learned to their fellow youth.
Meanwhile, BBES Principal Alfred Gonzales expressed his gratitude towards Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and the local government for helping the youth prepare for their future, by launching programs such as the BULILIT Program, stating: “Talagang saludo ako kay Mayor. Malaking malaki ang pagmamahal niya sa kabataan. Kaya natutuwa kami sa lahat ng projects at programs nila, lalo na rin sa DepEd, kasi ang concern nila talaga ay para sa mga kapakanan ng bata. So, lahat ng programs nila na para sa mga bata, talagang saludo kami at nandyan yung suporta namin.” (Marie Verdelle Jenica M. De Vera/CIO/Feb.22, 2018)
